Organic Indigo Face Mask
If it's possible to call a face mask art then this would be a stunning example of the kind of art people can make when they team up to create something truly unique. We collaborated with Neighborhood Fiber Co who has been creating hand-dyed indigo fabrics in their converted Baltimore firehouse since 2006. Together we have produced a limited number of traditionally dyed organic indigo masks.
Each mask is one of a kind and made using strict Global Organic Textile Standards. This mask features a graded spectrum of indigo in smokey blue tones that are deep and captivating, yet extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world. You will get lost in the blue shades, seriously we have had them in our studio for a few days and we can't stop looking at them!
This mask comes in 4 variations:
Indigo Wash is lightly blended shades of hand-dyed organic indigo
Bamboo is made by hand binding bamboo reeds across the fabric
Ombre is subtly graded from light to dark
Cedar is made using large cedar planks to create negative space within the indigo
Geo is bound with wood blocks to create distinct geometric prints
Organic indigo is a powder from the leaves of the indigo plant called Indigofera tinctoria, and it is one of the oldest dyes known to humankind. The earliest evidence of indigo powder comes from Peru in 2000 BC. It's the only natural blue on earth and has been used for centuries to naturally dye fabric and create a deep blue, unlike anything modern dyes can create. This fabric is dyed in small batches and creates a unique saturation each time, so your mask may be slightly darker or lighter than pictured.
Neighborhood Fiber Co uses hand-worked traditional techniques and a slow process to dye each batch. Infusing can take up to two weeks to complete as the indigo powder reacts with a blend of calcium and fructose to bond the color to the fabric. It's a natural method carried on since the dawn of culture and it continues today, carried on by a small group of artisans in a firehouse in Baltimore.
